By this time tomorrow, you will have greeted a new binary day in the new year 2010; perhaps for some you will still be asleep after 'auld lang syne' parties this evening! But my guess is that the new year will see more new digital products in this technology decade!
Our RT will have a new Chairperson in Mdm. Lee Kwee Cheng; so let us all resolve to continue to support neighbourhood activities; let us be happy, healthy and safe together! Cheers to all and best wishes for the new year!

What A Rainy Spell!
As the saying goes, into each life there's almost always some rain; but for some line dancers in our neighbourhood, rainfall invariably occurs every Tuesdays & Fridays! Which means the open air classes in the evenings are cancelled and we have to either find alternative forms of exercises, or eat less during these festive times! Nevertheless we look forward to the new year with renewed energy!

Towards a Safe & Clean Neighbourhood!
At the MBPJ Awards Night on October 30, 2009, our Dato' Menteri Besar Selangor, amongst other things, highlighted two main issues which he would like to see in Petaling Jaya - he wants a safe city and he wants a clean city too!
And this is where every neighbourhood in Petaling Jaya can play a role in striving to achieve these 2 goals! MBPJ has announced the formation of a 'special squad' to assist the Police towards making PJ a safe city; residents have likewise been doing so via various means like putting up gated & guarded communities and skim rondaan sukarela (SRS) or voluntary patrol by residents. One other 'software' is to get to know each other in a neighbourhood and be the 'CCTV' to crimes and report them directly to the Police.
A clean city has to start with each individual neighbourhood taking steps to educate residents on the need to not just keep their own front yard clean but also that of the neighbourhood. There are residents who like to gather all their rubbish and drop them off at their neighbour's house! This 'rubbish thy neighbour' habit has to stop!
And yes - we must also stop the act of 'vandallising thy neighbourhood' - be it Government or private properties! The total disregard for Government & private properties by sticking all sorts of notices on them cannot be condoned; even road signages have been plastered all over! We certainly need the will of all stakeholders in a neighbourhood to put an end to this menace!

Best Neighbourhood Awards Night on 30-10-09
The 2008/2009 Award went to Damansara Jaya Residents' & Owners' Association (DJROA) last night at the MBPJ Civic Centre! Congratulations to them for coming out ahead of 24 other competing neighbourhoods! I believe they also won the Award years ago when the competition first started!
Our RT was not even placed which means we still have some way to go! Let us not be discouraged but we need to get more residents (both young & old) to be active in our own neighbourhood programmes. We need fresh resources and inputs!

Green Building Tax Incentives for Houses?
Whilst we have just heard about the Government's recent budget incentives to encourage 'green buildings', one wonders whether the individual tax payer who also converts his home into a 'green home' will get similar tax incentives? Our MBPJ ( please read blog by Mr. Lee Lih Shyan) has been a prime mover in this area and perhaps the Government's aims to promote a green environment should start with providing tax incentives for the individual - its the cumulative effort of each part that makes the total sum of achieving a green environment a success!

Mid-Autumn Festival By DAP on 4-10-09
Our ADUN Dr. Cheah and all his DAP team members organised a great evening party on Sunday, 04-10-09 at the basketball court along SS2/34 & SS2/32. Our fellow residents were fotunate that the party was held in the midst of our neighbourhood, and there were plenty of activities both for children and adults too! Food was of course on the table for one and all! And did you see a dragon followed by children with lighted lanterns? What an evening of fun and fellowship! Cheers!

Breaking News! Again??
Lest some of us may think that our blog has been abandoned due to a lack of news (whether good or not so good), we are actually breaking the silence to say that your neighbourhood blog is not in dreamland yet! And what better news to break the lull other than to report that as of yesterday that were two break-ins in our area!! Well, we had 'relative' peace of mind with respect to security for about 4 months after security guards were engaged and now this! Still need to be on guard lah! Back to square one??

Such a Dedicated Lot!
On Thursday, 21st August around 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm there was an open lorry with 1 gal and 4 guys going around the neighbourhood with a loudspeaker. No, they were not collecting 'old newspapers'. They were RT members drumming up support for the guarded community scheme, and importantly, to remind residents to make payments for Sept/Nov 09.
One guy with 'ahem' manly but sometimes shaky voice (must be the lorry lah) and this gal, clear and distinct making the announcement in english and manderin respectively. A younger man was holding on and directing the loudspeaker to get maximum message power. Along the way, some residents came scurrying ,stopped the lorry, and handed in cheques.
If only our civil servants would show such dedication to their work and duties!
Surely the community give thanks to Lee Kwee Cheng, HK Tan, Chin Hock and Charles Ong. Ngiam came for the ride. The view of SS2B is quite different from atop an open lorry on a cool, breezy twilight evening as the sun slowly dips in the distant horizon!!

It's Never Too Old To Have Fun
Monday August 17, 2009
By ZALINAH NOORDIN
PETALING JAYA: Seventy-year-old Jenny Hew has happy feet which keeps her feeling young. “Dancing makes me feel young and happy. This is a good pastime as it is a form of exercise and fun too,” said the septuagenarian who with 600 others took part in a massive line dance party at The Atria shopping mall here yesterday.
She said line dancing could be taken up by everyone, from children to “people my age” as it is a not strenuous activity. Another participant, 65-year-old Rosy Tan said she had found many new friends through line dancing.
“Who says old grandmothers like us have to stay at home and knit?” said this grandmother of five from Penang at the event, dubbed “Good Time Line Dance Party” organised by BPR Line Dance.
Organiser Prince Lam, an avid line dancer, said the event was a good way to promote healthy living the fun way.
Retiree Ken Ong, 60, said he persisted with his line-dancing despite the comments of his male friends.
“What is there to be shy about? The most important is that I’m having fun and I’m healthy,” said the Petaling Jaya resident.
Christina Chan, another dance enthusiast who was also the event emcee, said dancing kept her fit and trim. “Line dancing is interesting because it incorporates different types of dance routines ranging from the waltz, cha-cha, rumbha and even salsa,” she said.
True enough, all of the participant had a blast of a time dancing to fast songs such as Rock Around The Clock, Jai Ho and even Spanish numbers such as Viva La Vida and Bossa Nova.

SS2B RT voluntary patrolling scheme doubles membership
By JADE CHAN
THE SS2B Rukun Tetangga (RT) in Petaling Jaya commemorated the first year of its voluntary patrolling scheme (skim rondaan sukarela or SRS) by doubling its number of volunteers.
The National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN) and SS2B RT provided the additional batch of 30 volunteers with items like luminous vests, whistles and batons.
“It is the unity and cooperation within the community that helps prevent crime,” said PJ OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed during the presentation ceremony.
“By patrolling the area, you will get to know your neighbours and neighbourhood, and be able to recognise the residents and those who are not local to the area.
“It helps the police with our work when we receive information from residents about suspicious people or unfamiliar vehicles in their neighbourhood,” said Arjunaidi.
“The SRS helps create uneasiness among the bad hats and update the police on the ongoings in the neighbourhood.”
Seapark police station officer-in-charge Chief Inspector Mohd Sahar Yunus said the SS2B RT’s SRS works closely with the Seapark police station, and regularly updates his officers on suspicious activities in the neighbourhood and times of crime incidence.
“Since the SRS was launched, the crime rate has decreased by half over the past year. It even went down to zero at one time last year.
“We send our officers or patrol vehicles to assist whenever the SRS conducts their patrolling,” said Mohd Sahar.
Arjunaidi also commended the SS2B RT on being able to maintain the scheme’s momentum since its launch, and even increasing its number of volunteers.
SS2B RT chairman Ngiam Chong Choy said the scheme was initiated upon the residents’ request to take a proactive move about the security for the 511 homes in SS2B.
“We sometimes patrol at night, sometimes during the daytime. We recently started a 5.30am patrol as well.
“The scheme complements the efforts by the police. In addition to making residents feel more safe and comfortable, it’s an opportunity for them to get to know their neighbours better,” said Ngiam.
He added that SS2B became a guarded neighbourhood from early June 2009 with the hiring of a security company to guard the neighbourhood.
Desmond Chew, 52, said he volunteered for the scheme as he wanted to help keep his neighbourhood safe.
“I hope more people will participate, and that more housing estates would take up the SRS.
“The scheme offers a great avenue to interact and network with our neighbours,” said the businessman.
